Marriage pendant (tali)
Chettinad, South India, 19th century
Acc. No. 88.623
The marriage pendant (tali) usually forms the central element of the kalithiru &ndash the marriage necklace of the Nattukottai Chettiars. The sheet gold pendant, decorated with finely detailed open work design has as its centerpiece a miniature replica of a temple with the image of Shiva and Parvati seated on their vehicle (vahana), the bull Rishabha within. The deities are flanked on either side with attendant figures, flowers and scrolling vines.
