Coin of Chhatrapati Shivaji
1674-1680 A.D.

Place of origin: Maratha
Materials: Gold
Dimensions: Dia: 1.3 cm.
Obverse: No image, simple inscription
Reverse: No image, simple inscription
Acc. No. 59.152/1298

Unlike coins of other Hindu rulers this Maratha coin does not incorporate any deity image it has however the inscription on the obverse: 'Sri Raja Shiva', that could be both, the name of the Maratha ruler Shivaji as also Lord Shiva. The two line Devanagari legend has been inscribed within a beaded border. The legend on the reverse, again contained within the similar beaded border, reads as 'Chhatrapati', obviously a popular epithet of Shivaji. As such, &lsquoSri Raja Shiva&rsquo on the obverse could not be for the Maratha ruler for his name should not have been repeated twice, and it thus only commemorates Lord Shiva.
